North Oakland SCAMP Funding Corporation

The mission of the North Oakland SCAMP Funding Corporation (NOSFC) is to provide funding for Clarkston SCAMP. The program provides these youth a chance to enjoy social interaction with other students and not spend their summer indoors, alone, and without peer interaction. The SCAMP experience also provides respite for the SCAMPers' families and a wonderful opportunity for community members to gain a greater understanding of individuals with special needs. Since many families with "special needs" youth experience overwhelming medical and care giving expenses, keeping SCAMP affordable to those eligible was and remains a primary concern. Our goal is to have no child left behind.

For 40 years, SCAMP has provided a five-week summer experience for children all over southeastern Michigan. Since its inception, it has grown from 75 to over 225 SCAMPers. We support students with a wide range of special needs including autism spectrum disorders, physical disabilities, and cognitive or emotional impairment. There are over 50 young adults that volunteer at the camp in addition to over 100 trained staff to provide support and positive social interaction. Daily activities include music, art, motor skill activities, games, field trips and special on-site visits by groups for educational and entertainment purposes. We also use the facilities at Independence Oaks County Park enabling us to hike, swim, boat and fish. For five weeks, our SCAMPers are challenged to grow in abilities and self-esteem and “to be the best that they can be”.

In the words of a SCAMPer mother, “SCAMP changed me, my daughter, and our lives forever. Knowing there is a place for her in society where she can be herself, with no judgment, is a true blessing. I hope that all of the contributors to SCAMP realize how many lives they have touched in so many ways.”
